I was born in 1963 to a middle class family, the eldest of three. My father was a manager at a pharmaceutical company, he mother a housewife. I was an average student and active on both the debate and the tennis teams. I graduated 15th in a class of 250. In 1981 I began my undergraduate work at Michigan. In 1988 I successfully graduated from Medical school and became Chief of Medicine at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.
My job description says:
As Hospital administrator I am responsible for clinical supervision and leadership of clinical providers assigned to internal medicine, pulmonary, and neurology. I am also required to be a clinical leader and provider with experience to assess clinical competence and current best practices. The Hospital Administrator is also responsible for oversight of internal medicine support structure such as out-patient clinic and office clerical/management staff.
However, in reality I am, primarily responsible to keep the staff happy, balance the budget, and ensure world class treatment for my patients, but not necessarily in that order. I am a glorified baby-sitter and some days I love it more then others. When I am not propping up egos, I can be found on the tennis courts, or in a yoga studio working on my downward facing dog.
